SkinPen Before and Aftercare: What You Need to Know

SkinPen Before and Aftercare: What You Need to Know - BEAUTYFLUFF

SkinPen microneedling can be a wonderful way to encourage smoother, more refreshed-looking skin, but the treatment itself is only one part of the process.

How you prepare beforehand—and how gently you care for your skin afterward—can make a meaningful difference in your comfort, recovery, and overall experience.

Fortunately, SkinPen aftercare does not need to be complicated. For the most part, your job is to keep your skin calm, clean, protected, and free from anything overly active or irritating while it settles.

Here is everything you should know before and after your SkinPen treatment at Beautyfluff.

What Is SkinPen?

SkinPen is a professional microneedling device that uses a sterile, single-use cartridge containing tiny needles.

As the device moves over the treatment area, the needles create thousands of precise microchannels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries encourage the skin’s natural repair and remodeling process, including the production of new collagen.

Unlike radiofrequency microneedling treatments such as Morpheus8, SkinPen does not use heat or radiofrequency energy. Its effects come from the controlled microneedling process itself.

SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older. It is also cleared to improve the appearance of wrinkles on the neck within certain skin types.

At Beautyfluff, your treatment will be adjusted according to your skin, the area being treated, and your personal goals.

Before Your SkinPen Treatment

Preparing for SkinPen mostly involves giving your skin a quiet, uncomplicated few days.

The goal is to arrive with skin that is healthy, calm, and free from sunburn, inflammation, or open areas.

Take a Short Break From Retinoids

Stop using topical retinoids for at least 24 hours before your SkinPen appointment, or for the longer period recommended by your provider.

This includes products such as:

  • Retinol

  • Retinal

  • Tretinoin

  • Retin-A

  • Adapalene

  • Other prescription or over-the-counter retinoids

Retinoids can make the skin drier, more sensitive, or more prone to irritation. Even if you normally tolerate them well, taking a short break gives your skin a calmer starting point for treatment.

Your provider may also recommend temporarily pausing other strong active ingredients, particularly if they tend to leave your skin dry or sensitive. These may include exfoliating acids, scrubs, benzoyl peroxide, and strong vitamin C formulas.

For now, a gentle cleanser, a simple moisturizer, and daily sun protection are plenty.

Stay Away From Sunburns and Tanning

Avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, and sunburn for at least 24 hours before your appointment.

More importantly, do not arrive with skin that is actively sunburned, deeply tanned, peeling, or irritated. If that happens, let us know! Your skin may need a little more time before it is ready for treatment.

Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen regularly before your appointment, and consider adding a hat or staying in the shade when you will be outside for a while.

Sun protection may not be the most exciting part of skincare, but it is one of the most helpful things you can do for freshly treated skin.

Check Your Skin Before Your Appointment

SkinPen should not be performed over active breakouts, cold sores, open wounds, irritated skin, or infected areas.

Please contact us before your appointment if you develop:

  • A significant or inflamed acne breakout

  • An active cold sore

  • Open cuts, sores, or lesions

  • A rash

  • A skin infection

  • A flare of eczema, psoriasis, or another skin condition

  • A recent sunburn

  • Any unexpected irritation in the treatment area

Rescheduling may feel inconvenient, but treating already-inflamed or broken skin can increase the chance of irritation, infection, and a more difficult recovery.

It is much kinder to your skin to wait until it is ready.

Tell Us if You Have a History of Cold Sores

Microneedling can occasionally reactivate the herpes simplex virus, particularly when treating areas around the mouth.

If you have ever had cold sores, tell your provider before your appointment—even if you have not had an outbreak in a long time.

We recommend beginning preventive valacyclovir, commonly known as Valtrex, three days before treatment when appropriate. This medication must be prescribed and taken according to your provider’s directions.

Discuss Your Health and Medications

Before getting SkinPen, let your provider know about your medical conditions, prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements.

This is especially important if you:

  • Have a bleeding or clotting disorder

  • Take anticoagulants or blood-thinning medication

  • Have diabetes or difficulty healing

  • Have an autoimmune condition

  • Take immunosuppressive medication

  • Are receiving immunotherapy

  • Have a weakened immune system

  • Have a history of keloids or abnormal scarring

  • Have eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, rosacea, or another chronic skin condition

  • Have a history of contact dermatitis or product allergies

  • Are allergic to stainless steel

  • Are allergic or sensitive to topical anesthetics

  • Are undergoing cancer treatment

  • Have a history of skin cancer in the treatment area

None of this is something to feel awkward about sharing. It simply helps your provider decide whether SkinPen is appropriate and whether any part of your treatment plan needs to be adjusted.

Do not stop prescribed medications in preparation for SkinPen unless the clinician who prescribed them has specifically told you to do so.

Wait After Isotretinoin

We recommend waiting at least six months after finishing oral isotretinoin, often known by the former brand name Accutane, before receiving SkinPen.

Isotretinoin can affect the skin’s dryness, sensitivity, and healing response.

Tell your provider about current or previous isotretinoin use, even if you finished the medication several months ago. They can confirm when it is appropriate for you to begin treatment.

Pregnancy and Nursing

SkinPen should not be performed during pregnancy or while nursing. Let us know if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, are trying to become pregnant, or are currently breastfeeding.

Give Other Treatments Enough Space

Your skin needs enough time between SkinPen and other aesthetic treatments.

We currently recommend waiting at least:

  • 48 hours before or after BOTOX® or another neuromodulator

  • One week before or after dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®

  • One month before or after laser treatments, IPL, VBeam, deep chemical peels, or microdermabrasion

The correct spacing may vary depending on the treatment area, the product used, and how completely your skin has healed.

Let your provider know about every recent facial, injection, laser, peel, or skin procedure. Even if it seems unrelated, it is better to mention it and allow your provider to decide.

The Day of Your Appointment

Whenever possible, arrive with clean, bare skin.

Avoid applying makeup, self-tanner, facial oils, heavy creams, or active skincare products to the treatment area. Your provider will thoroughly cleanse and prepare your skin before beginning.

A topical numbing product may be used to help make the treatment more comfortable. Tell your provider if you have ever had an allergy or unusual reaction to lidocaine, topical anesthetics, antiseptics, adhesives, stainless steel, or skincare products.

It is also helpful to:

  • Eat normally beforehand unless instructed otherwise

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Wear comfortable clothing

  • Keep long hair away from the treatment area

  • Avoid wearing clothing that rubs against an area being treated

Before the procedure begins, your provider will review your skin and make sure nothing important has changed since your consultation.

What Should You Expect After SkinPen?

Immediately after treatment, your skin will probably look pink or red. It may feel warm, tight, tender, or mildly sensitive—similar to a moderate sunburn.

This is a normal response to microneedling.

You may also notice:

  • Mild swelling

  • Dryness

  • Roughness

  • Tightness

  • Mild itching or tingling

  • Light peeling

  • Pinpoint bleeding or tiny crusts

  • Tenderness when touching the skin

  • Temporary darkening of pigmentation

The exact reaction depends on your skin, the treatment area, and the depth used.

Some people calm down fairly quickly, while others remain pink or sensitive for several days. There is no need to compare your recovery too closely to someone else’s. Your skin will move at its own pace.

Your First 24 Hours

For the first 24 hours, we recommend using only the Rescue Calming Complex or Lift Serum provided or approved by your provider.

Do not use your normal:

  • Cleanser

  • Moisturizer

  • Sunscreen

  • Makeup

  • Serums

  • Toners

  • Oils

  • Active skincare products

This may feel surprisingly minimal, especially if you are used to a longer skincare routine. For the first day, however, less is more!

Apply only the instructed products with freshly washed hands. Avoid rubbing, massaging, or repeatedly touching the area.

Because sunscreen shouldn't be used on the first day after treatment, we recommend you remain indoors and avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.

Days Two Through Four

Beginning on the second day, you may generally start using:

  • A gentle cleanser

  • Rescue Calming Complex

  • Lift Serum

  • A zinc oxide sunscreen

  • Makeup, if your skin feels calm and intact

Use lukewarm rather than hot water, and cleanse with clean hands. Pat the skin dry with a clean, soft towel instead of rubbing it.

Avoid heavily fragranced products, exfoliating cleansers, cleansing brushes, washcloth scrubbing, or anything that leaves the skin feeling tight or uncomfortable.

If a product burns, stings for more than a brief moment, or makes your redness noticeably worse, stop using it and contact Beautyfluff for guidance.

Be Patient With Makeup

Generally speaking, it's okay to start using makeup again beginning on the second day.

However, it is still a good idea to look at how your skin feels before applying it. If the area remains very tender, open, unusually irritated, or covered with fresh crusting, ask your provider whether waiting another day would be better.

When you return to makeup:

  • Use clean brushes and applicators

  • Avoid expired products

  • Apply everything gently

  • Do not rub or buff the skin

  • Remove makeup carefully

  • Do not apply makeup over open, blistered, or draining skin

Don't worry, our skin won't mind having a little extra breathing room!

Keep Strong Skincare Products on Pause

Do not immediately return to retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, or other strong products once the first 24 hours have passed.

Wait until your skin is fully calm and your provider says that it is ready.

Products that may need a longer break include:

  • Retinol and prescription retinoids

  • Glycolic acid

  • Salicylic acid

  • Lactic acid

  • Other alpha or beta hydroxy acids

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Facial scrubs

  • Exfoliating brushes

  • At-home peels

  • Strong or acidic vitamin C products

When you do restart them, introduce products gradually rather than bringing your entire routine back at once.

A quiet skincare routine may feel a little boring for a few days, but boring is often exactly what healing skin needs.

Avoid Exercise and Heavy Sweating

Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy sweating for 72 hours after SkinPen, or for the timeframe given by your provider.

Exercise increases heat, blood flow, and sweat, which may make redness, swelling, stinging, and irritation more noticeable.

During this period, it is also sensible to avoid:

  • Hot yoga

  • Saunas

  • Steam rooms

  • Hot tubs

  • Very hot showers

  • Other activities that cause intense flushing or sweating

Light, comfortable daily movement is generally fine. This is simply a good excuse to give yourself a few calmer days.

Stay Out of the Sun

Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 72 hours after your treatment.

During the first 24 hours, remain indoors as much as possible!

Beginning on day two, apply the recommended zinc oxide sunscreen and continue to protect the treatment area with:

  • Shade

  • A wide-brimmed hat

  • Protective clothing

  • Limited outdoor time

  • Regular sunscreen reapplication

Avoid tanning beds and deliberate tanning completely while the skin is healing.

Careful sun protection helps reduce inflammation and lowers the chance of unwanted darkening or lightening of the treated skin.

A Note for Deeper Skin Tones

SkinPen has been studied for facial acne scars across a full range of skin types. However, any procedure that creates controlled inflammation can carry some risk of temporary pigmentation changes.

For Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI (if you have a darker, melanin-rich skin tone), pigmentation may occasionally appear darker before it lightens.

This does not mean that darker skin cannot be treated. It simply makes thoughtful treatment settings, provider experience, careful sun protection, and proper aftercare especially important.

Do Not Pick or Scrub

Your skin may feel dry, rough, or lightly textured as it recovers.

Try not to pick, scratch, peel, or exfoliate it.

Small flakes or crusts should be allowed to loosen naturally. Removing them too early can irritate the skin and increase the chance of infection, scarring, or pigmentation changes.

If dryness bothers you, use only the products your provider has approved. A little patience will help much more than a scrub.

Keep Things Clean

The temporary channels created during microneedling make gentle hygiene especially important.

For the first few days:

  • Wash your hands before touching your face

  • Use a clean pillowcase

  • Keep phones and glasses clean

  • Avoid rubbing the treatment area

  • Use clean towels, makeup tools, and applicators

  • Avoid sharing skincare or makeup products

Do not use at-home microneedling devices, facial brushes, or other tools over the area while it is recovering.

Wait Before Other Facial Treatments

Avoid facials, waxing, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, lasers, injectables, and other aesthetic treatments until we confirm that your skin is ready.

The current SkinPen manufacturer guidance recommends avoiding other facial aesthetic treatments for approximately one month afterward.

Your next SkinPen appointment should also be scheduled according to your provider’s plan, generally no sooner than four weeks after the previous treatment.

Skin remodeling is gradual. Giving your skin time between treatments is part of the treatment—not an interruption of it.

A General Day-by-Day Guide

Every person heals differently, but but here's our general recovery guide:

Day One

Mild to moderate redness and swelling may be present, similar to a sunburn.

Use only the instructed Rescue Calming Complex or Lift Serum. Do not apply regular cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, or makeup.

Avoid sunlight, exercise, heat, and unnecessary touching.

Day Two

Some redness, warmth, tightness, or swelling may still be visible.

You may begin using a gentle cleanser, Rescue Calming Complex, Lift Serum, and zinc oxide sunscreen. Makeup may be used if the skin is calm and your provider has not told you otherwise.

Day Three

For many patients, most redness and swelling are beginning to fade.

The skin may still feel dry, rough, tight, or lightly flaky. Continue treating it gently and keep strong active ingredients out of your routine.

Day Four

Many patients are close to their normal appearance by this point.

Some dryness, sensitivity, or light flaking may remain, particularly after a deeper treatment. Continue to follow your provider’s instructions rather than rushing back into exfoliation.

What Is Normal After SkinPen?

Temporary reactions may include:

  • Redness

  • Mild swelling

  • Warmth

  • Tightness

  • Dry or rough texture

  • Mild tenderness

  • Light peeling

  • Itching or tingling

  • Pinpoint bleeding

  • Tiny crusts

  • Mild bruising

  • Temporary darkening or lightening of pigmentation

These effects should gradually improve.

Although the surface may look fairly normal within several days, the deeper remodeling process continues for much longer. Results do not need to appear immediately for the treatment to be doing its work.

When Should You Contact Beautyfluff?

Contact the clinic if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening pain

  • Redness that continues spreading or intensifying

  • Increasing swelling

  • Blistering

  • Pus, drainage, or a foul odor

  • Fever or feeling unwell

  • Open sores

  • A significant rash

  • A cold-sore outbreak

  • Persistent bleeding

  • Severe itching or hives

  • Difficulty breathing or another sign of an allergic reaction

  • Significant or lasting pigmentation changes

  • Any reaction that feels unusual or concerning

Most patients experience only temporary redness and sensitivity, but you do not need to wait until a concern becomes severe before reaching out.

When something does not feel right, asking early is always the better choice.

Follow Your Personal Treatment Plan

This article provides a general guide, but no two SkinPen treatments are exactly the same.

Your provider may adjust your aftercare based on:

  • Your skin type

  • Your sensitivity

  • The area being treated

  • The depth used

  • Your medical history

  • Your current skincare routine

  • The presence of acne scars or pigmentation

  • Whether SkinPen was performed alongside another treatment

Always follow the personalized instructions given to you by your Beautyfluff provider, even when they differ slightly from general guidance online.

Conclusion

SkinPen can help support smoother-looking skin and gradual collagen remodeling, but your skin needs a little time and gentleness afterward.

Before your appointment, protect your skin from the sun, pause retinoids, and let your provider know about any medications, health conditions, recent procedures, breakouts, or history of cold sores.

Afterward, keep your routine beautifully simple. Use only the instructed products during the first day, avoid makeup and sunscreen until day two, stay away from sun and heavy exercise for 72 hours, and allow any dryness or flaking to settle naturally.

At Beautyfluff, we take the time to understand your skin and create a treatment plan around your individual needs. We will also walk you through your personal before-and-aftercare instructions so you can approach your SkinPen appointment feeling informed, comfortable, and cared for.
