Meet Clinical Psychologist Dr. Laura Silver McGuire

Dr. Laura Silver McGuire is a New York State–licensed clinical psychologist whose work spans private practice, academic teaching, and nationally recognized research. Based in Great Neck, she works with adolescents and adults, bringing decades of experience in both clinical care and behavioral research to her practice.

Her career reflects a rare combination of academic scholarship and practical application. Earlier in her career, Dr. McGuire served as Project Director at the National Development and Research Institutes, where she led school-based research initiatives focused on preventing violence, tobacco use, and substance abuse among youth. These programs contributed to broader public health efforts aimed at improving safety and well-being in school environments.

Her academic work has been equally influential. She co-authored Assessment of Family Violence: A Handbook for Researchers and Practitioner and the bullying prevention curriculum she developed as part of her doctoral research continues to be implemented in schools across Long Island through Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) of Roslyn, reaching students and educators throughout the region.

Dr. McGuire has also played an important role in training the next generation of clinicians. She previously served as Assistant Director of the Psychological Services Center and Adjunct Faculty at Long Island University’s C.W. Post Campus, where she supervised clinical training and taught graduate students pursuing careers in psychology.

Alongside her clinical work, she regularly consults with school districts and presents at national conferences, promoting healthier learning environments and encouraging stronger communities.

Across every setting—from the therapy room to the classroom to large-scale research initiatives—Dr. McGuire’s work reflects a deep commitment to advancing the understanding of human behavior and applying that knowledge in ways that make a meaningful impact.
