SkinPen PRP Before and Aftercare: What You Need to Know

SkinPen PRP Before and Aftercare: What You Need to Know - BEAUTYFLUFF

SkinPen + PRP brings together two treatments with one shared goal: giving your skin a little encouragement to renew itself. SkinPen creates tiny, controlled microchannels in the skin, while platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is prepared from a small sample of your own blood and incorporated into the treatment according to your provider’s plan.

Because your appointment includes both microneedling and a blood draw, there are a few extra things to keep in mind when preparing. Afterward, your skin will also appreciate a few days of simple, gentle care.

Here's what to know before and after your SkinPen + PRP treatment at Beautyfluff.

Before Your SkinPen + PRP Treatment

The goal before treatment is fairly simple: keep your skin calm, arrive comfortably hydrated, and make sure your provider has a complete picture of your health.

Give Your Skin a Break From Irritating Products

Stop using topical retinoids for at least 24 hours before your appointment, or for the longer period recommended by your Beautyfluff provider. You may also be asked to temporarily pause products that leave your skin dry, peeling, or sensitive, including:

  • Glycolic, salicylic, and other exfoliating acids

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Facial scrubs

  • At-home peels

  • Strong vitamin C products

  • Other potentially irritating active ingredients

For now, a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen are plenty.

Avoid Sunburn and Excessive Sun Exposure

Avoid excessive sun exposure and sunburn before treatment.

If your skin becomes sunburned, significantly irritated, or begins peeling before your appointment, let us know. Starting with calm, healthy skin is much kinder than adding microneedling to skin that is already unhappy.

Continue wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen before your appointment.

Check Your Skin Before Treatment

SkinPen should not be used over active breakouts, cold sores, open wounds, sores, or significantly irritated skin.

Contact Beautyfluff if you develop:

  • An active cold sore

  • Open or broken skin

  • A significant inflammatory breakout

  • A rash or skin infection

  • A flare of eczema, psoriasis, or another skin condition

  • A recent sunburn

  • Any new or unexplained irritation

Your treatment may simply need to wait until the area has healed.

Mention Any History of Cold Sores

If you have a history of cold sores, tell your provider before your appointment.

We recommend antiviral pretreatment beginning three days beforehand when appropriate. Only use antiviral medication prescribed or approved for you by your healthcare provider.

Even if your last cold sore was years ago, it's still always worth mentioning.

Share Your Medical History and Medications

Because SkinPen + PRP involves both microneedling and a blood draw, tell your provider about any health condition or medication that may affect your skin, blood, immune system, or ability to heal.

This is especially important if you:

  • Have a bleeding or clotting disorder

  • Take anticoagulants or blood-thinning medication

  • Have diabetes or difficulty healing

  • Have a weakened immune system

  • Take immunosuppressive medication

  • Have an autoimmune condition

  • Have a history of keloids or unusual scarring

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Are undergoing treatment for cancer

  • Have an allergy to stainless steel or topical anesthetics

Also tell your provider about prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements.

Do not stop a medically necessary medication on your own. If something may interfere with treatment, your provider and prescribing clinician can help determine what is safe.

Wait After Isotretinoin

Current SkinPen guidance recommends waiting at least six months after oral isotretinoin, commonly known by the former brand name Accutane.

Tell your provider about any recent isotretinoin use, even if you have already finished treatment.

Give Other Facial Treatments Enough Space

We recommend waiting at least:

  • 48 hours before or after BOTOX®

  • One week before or after dermal fillers

  • One month before or after laser treatments, deep chemical peels, or microdermabrasion

Tell your provider about any recent aesthetic procedure, even if you are unsure whether it matters.

Hydrate and Eat Normally

Since PRP begins with a blood draw, arrive comfortably hydrated.

Drink water regularly before your appointment and have a normal meal or snack unless your provider tells you otherwise.

If blood draws tend to make you dizzy or faint, let the team know. A little warning makes it much easier to keep you comfortable.

The Day of Your Appointment

Whenever possible, arrive with clean, bare skin.

Avoid makeup, self-tanner, facial oils, heavy creams, or active skincare products over the treatment area.

Before treatment, your provider will cleanse and prepare your skin. A topical numbing product may be used for comfort, so let the team know if you have ever reacted to lidocaine or another local anesthetic.

A small blood sample will also be drawn and processed to prepare your PRP.

From there, your provider will walk you through the treatment and explain how the PRP will be incorporated into your personal SkinPen session.

What to Expect After SkinPen + PRP

Your skin will probably look noticeably pink or red immediately afterward.

It may feel similar to a moderate sunburn, with temporary:

  • Redness

  • Mild swelling

  • Warmth

  • Tightness

  • Tenderness

  • Dryness or rough texture

  • Mild itching

  • Light flaking

  • Pinpoint marks or tiny crusts

  • Mild bruising from the blood draw

Some pigmentation may temporarily appear darker before it begins to lighten, particularly in deeper skin tones.

Most redness and swelling should gradually settle over the first few days. Your skin may look much calmer before it feels completely back to normal, so continue treating it gently even when the redness has faded.

The First 24 Hours

For the first day, we recommend keeping your skincare light and simple. Use only the post-treatment products instructed by your provider, such as the Rescue Calming Complex or Lift Serum.

Avoid your usual:

  • Cleanser

  • Moisturizer

  • Sunscreen

  • Makeup

  • Toners

  • Retinoids

  • Exfoliating products

  • Other serums or active ingredients

Try not to touch or rub your face unnecessarily. When you do need to touch the area, wash your hands first. Because sunscreen is not used during this first period, stay indoors and avoid direct sunlight as carefully as possible.

Your skin has already had a busy day. It does not need your entire skincare shelf joining in.

Days Two Through Four

Beginning on the second day, we generally recommend:

  • A gentle cleanser

  • Rescue Calming Complex

  • Lift Serum

  • Zinc oxide sunscreen

Makeup may also be resumed beginning on day two if the skin is intact and comfortable.

Use lukewarm water and clean hands when washing your face. Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing it.

Avoid cleansing brushes, washcloth scrubbing, facial devices, or anything else that creates friction.

If makeup stings or your skin still feels unusually irritated, there is nothing wrong with giving it another makeup-free day.

Avoid Sun and Heavy Exercise

Avoid direct sun exposure and sweaty exercise for 72 hours after treatment.

This also means temporarily staying away from activities that create a great deal of heat or perspiration, such as:

  • Intense workouts

  • Hot yoga

  • Saunas

  • Steam rooms

  • Hot tubs

  • Very hot showers

Use sunscreen carefully and consistently when your provider gives you the go-ahead.

Your freshly treated skin will be more sensitive to sunlight, and thoughtful sun protection can help reduce irritation and unwanted pigmentation.

Keep Active Skincare on Pause

Do not rush back into retinol, exfoliating acids, scrubs, or other strong products.

Wait until your skin is no longer red, tender, flaky, or unusually sensitive and your provider says your normal routine can resume.

When you restart active ingredients, bring them back gradually rather than applying everything on the same night.

Your skin does not need to prove how quickly it can get back to work.

Do Not Pick or Exfoliate

Small flakes, dry patches, or tiny crusts may appear as your skin heals.

Let them come away naturally.

Avoid:

  • Picking

  • Scratching

  • Peeling loose skin

  • Facial scrubs

  • Exfoliating brushes

  • At-home peels

Trying to speed up the process may increase irritation and the risk of infection, scarring, or pigmentation changes.

A gentle moisturizer once approved by your provider will be much more helpful than exfoliation.

Keep Things Clean

For the first few days, a little extra attention to cleanliness is worthwhile.

Try to:

  • Wash your hands before touching your face

  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase

  • Keep your phone and glasses clean

  • Use fresh towels

  • Use clean makeup brushes and applicators

  • Avoid sharing skincare or makeup

These are small things, but freshly treated skin appreciates them.

When Should You Contact Beautyfluff?

Contact us if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening pain

  • Redness or swelling that continues increasing

  • Blistering

  • Open or weeping skin

  • Pus, drainage, or another sign of infection

  • Fever or feeling unwell

  • A significant rash or hives

  • A cold-sore outbreak

  • Persistent bleeding

  • Severe or lasting pigmentation changes

  • Any reaction that feels unusual or concerning

Temporary redness, tightness, dryness, and sensitivity are expected. Symptoms that become more intense instead of gradually settling deserve a closer look.

You do not need to wait until something becomes severe before reaching out.

Follow Your Personal Treatment Plan

These instructions provide a general guide, but every SkinPen + PRP appointment is a little different.

Your recovery may depend on your skin type, sensitivity, treatment depth, medical history, PRP protocol, and how your skin responds during the appointment.

Always follow the instructions given directly by your Beautyfluff provider, even when they differ slightly from general information online.

SkinPen treatments are typically spaced at least four weeks apart when performed as a series. Your provider will recommend the number and timing of appointments that make sense for your individual goals.

Conclusion

SkinPen + PRP combines controlled microneedling with platelet-rich plasma prepared from your own blood, making thoughtful preparation and gentle recovery especially important.

Before treatment, keep your skin calm, avoid excessive sun, pause retinoids as instructed, arrive hydrated, and give your provider a complete picture of your health and medications.

Afterward, keep things beautifully simple. Use only approved products during the first day, protect your skin from sunlight, take a short break from sweaty exercise, and allow any dryness or flaking to settle naturally.

At Beautyfluff, we will take the time to understand your skin and create a SkinPen + PRP treatment plan around your individual concerns and goals. We will also walk you through your personal before-and-aftercare instructions so you know exactly what to expect.
